Finding Cheap Flights - A Guide

Some helpful hints for getting your summer travel plans off the ground...

Do Your Homework

Check a variety of websites. In addition to the usual Expedia or Travelocity, try some aggregator sites as well - like Kayak or Mobissimo. They take in a greater number of fares and may prove less expensive.

Also, the sites of individual airlines may not be as easy to navigate, but they are worth checking for sure! Especially international airlines and discount airlines, which don't always show up on major sites.

Get Timing Right

Plan very much ahead! Bing Travel has a price predictor to determine when the best fares for a region are. If you are concerned that fares might go down after you buy, Yapta's price tracker can notify you if/when a cheaper fare becomes available and you can pursue a refund.

In addition to planning ahead, being flexible helps too. Even a few days can make a huge difference in price. The best deals are usually on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Saturdays. Last-minute deals are also pop up, so be open to those too!

Make it Part of Your Lifestyle!

Be aware of student travel discounts, if applicable. Frequent forums like FlyerTalk. Sign up for updates from sites like AirfareWatchdog or TravelZoo. Check the fare-hunting sites often. If you have a credit card, utilize frequent flyer miles and see what you can do to arrange miles for purchases (or if family members can give you theirs!).

Good luck!

When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.
